Our advocacy in the Mid-Atlantic

The states of the Mid-Atlantic are economic powerhouses and political hotbeds, and they play key roles in our national energy and transportation systems. Ceres works with companies and investors that have significant operations in the Mid-Atlantic to advocate for robust clean energy, clean transportation, and environmental justice policies.

New Jersey

Companies and investors in the Garden State have made clear their support for ambitious emissions reductions and electric transportation solutions, and the state has responded with trailblazing climate, clean energy, and clean transportation policies. New Jersey has also become a champion of environmental justice policy, providing a model to the nation for growing the clean energy workforce.

Pennsylvania

While cities like Philadelphia and Pittsburgh are working toward a zero emissions economy, Pennsylvania has lagged its neighboring states in deploying clean energy and slashing emissions. Major businesses and employers in the state are advocating for forward-thinking policies, including the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative (RGGI), to ensure the state capitalizes on the nationwide surge in federal and private clean energy investment while adopting the innovative technologies it needs to maintain its critical role in powering the region.

Maryland

After investors and employers pushed Maryland to take a more aggressive approach to the climate crisis, the state has emerged in the 2020s as one of the most ambitious in the nation. Highlighted by its bold pledge to achieve a net zero economy by 2045, Maryland is now positioned to capture the potential of the clean energy economy as it continues to forge its path as a leader.

Corporate Advocacy in Action

Clean Jobs

As New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy unveiled a new plan to grow an equitable clean energy workforce, major employers in the state pledged to help develop a sustainable workforce of the future.

Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative

Pennsylvania agreed to join the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative to reduce emissions while maintaining its key role in the nation’s energy economy. More than two dozen companies, employers, and large energy consumers organized by Ceres advocated for the state to join.

Climate Solutions Now

With the support of 14 major businesses and investors, Maryland lawmakers finalized the state’s landmark climate and environmental justice legislation — including a commitment to achieving a net zero economy by 2045.

Advanced Clean Trucks

With dozens of companies supporting its adoption, New Jersey became one of the earliest states in the nation, and the first on the East Coast, to approve the Advanced Clean Trucks rule, setting the stage for the accelerated growth of clean vehicles on some of the nation’s most important freight corridors.

Electric Vehicles

Companies successfully advocated for the passage of legislation in New Jersey that establishes statewide goals for increasing the number of light-duty EVs sold in the state.

Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative

In New Jersey, Ceres worked with corporate leaders to successfully encourage the state to set an ambitious emissions cap when it rejoined the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative (RGGI).
