BelĂ©m, Brazil: Ceres and its partners will attend COP30 and other global convenings in Brazil to urge world leaders to take urgent action on climate pollution, protect nature, and support efforts to accelerate the global transition to a cleaner, more just, and resilient economy. Governments need to step up their ambitions and implement stronger national climate plans, build resilience by protecting forests and other natural ecosystems, and align public policies to shift from fossil fuels toward affordable clean energy solutions. Â
International cooperation, coupled with private sector action, is an economic imperative to avoid an escalating financial toll. A new Ceres analysis, for example, found the five key drivers of nature loss have the potential to cost eight global sectors up to $430 billion annually. Government and business action continue to drive economic and job growth, innovation, and investment. COP30 will also be a key forum to showcase the work of global investor initiatives, promoting responsible business practices and policy advocacy to address climate, water, and nature-related risks and opportunities. Recent initiative benchmarks (see here and here) highlight where companies are making progress and where gaps remain on stewardship. A handful of other recent analyses show sustained momentum in clean energy investing and corporate climate action.Â
“Building a clean energy revolution and ensuring a transition to a more resilient economy that safeguards the world’s critical natural ecosystems – such as the Amazon, where this year’s climate conference is taking place – will take every business and government to act. Action leads to competitiveness, resiliency, jobs, and a stronger economy,” said Ceres CEO and President Mindy Lubber. “COP30 will be critically important for world leaders and the private sector to come together and advance high-impact solutions that accelerate momentum.” Â
Ahead of COP30, Ceres and its partners will participate in other global convenings in Brazil, including an event on Nov.6, where we will release a new global assessment on investor climate action. And, on Nov. 18, Ceres will publish a new report on corporate progress toward addressing deforestation risks. Details on events can be found here: https://www.ceres.org/cop30. Experts are available for comments and statements in response to new developments as convenings get underway. Â
