Our advocacy in California

As one of the largest economies in the world and a global leader on climate, clean energy, and clean transportation policies, California has proven that economic growth and climate action go hand in hand. Ceres advances company and investor advocacy to continue California’s well-earned leadership on climate and sustainability issues.

Prepare for mandatory climate disclosure

California set the national standard for corporate climate disclosure with landmark legislation in 2023. Ceres co-sponsored the two historic bills, SB 253 and SB 261, which will require thousands of public and private companies to report their climate risks and emissions across their supply chains.

Advocacy in action

First-in-the-Nation Climate Disclosure Rules

Ceres co- sponsored two historic bills to bring mandatory climate disclosure to the U.S., and helped organize key support from major companies in a crucial period prior to the bills’ passage.

Advanced Clean Cars II

More than 40 companies and institutions rallied in support of the state’s adoption of the Advanced Clean Cars II rule. Designed to accelerate the shift to 100% clean vehicles by 2035, the ACC II rule has since been adopted by several other states.

Offshore Wind

Major companies advocated successfully in support of California Offshore Strategic Planning legislation to jumpstart the state’s offshore wind industry.

Building Electrification

California companies successfully pushed for a first-in-the-nation building code that is an important step forward towards all-electric buildings in the state of California.

Advanced Clean Truck Rule

California became the first state to adopt the Advanced Clean Trucks (ACT) rule, a zero-emission commercial truck requirement that directs manufacturers to sell an increasing number of clean, zero-emission trucks—setting the stage for states across the country to follow suit.

Climate Legislation

Ceres-led advocacy helped to pass major climate, clean energy, and clean transportation bills to help address emissions from commercial vehicles and allow agencies to consider GHG reductions in the development of appliance and building codes in order to further decarbonize the built environment.

Safe and Affordable Drinking Water Fund

Major California companies successfully pushed for adoption of the Safe and Affordable Drinking Water Fund to ensure equitable access to clean drinking water across the state.

100 Percent Energy Act

Major companies advocated successfully in support of the 100 Percent Energy Act, setting the state on a path to receive all of its electricity from zero-carbon sources by 2045.

Cap-and-Trade

Ceres marshalled the business community to demonstrate how this program has led to job growth and other economic benefits, which contributed to the passage of Assembly Bill 398 extending and strengthening the cap-and-trade program.
