Policy and regulationÂ
A sustainable economy requires the right public policy. We mobilize investors and companies—and engage with key lawmakers and regulators—to make the economic case for equitable and sustainable policies at all levels of government.
Our approach
Leading investors and companies know they need ambitious policies to meet their own bold climate targets and build a sustainable economy. We build investor and company support for policies and regulations that will accelerate a just and inclusive clean energy future.
Federal policy
By making the business case for new economic opportunities to prevent climate catastrophe, we bring a powerful voice to Washington, D.C.
State policy
We work with our members to engage key lawmakers and advance and defend state policies to achieve a more equitable, net zero economy.
Protect the freedom to invest
Special interest groups and their political allies are trying to blindfold investors and companies by restricting responsible decision-making about climate and sustainability risks. Hundreds of public and private sector leaders are standing up to protect the freedom to invest responsibly.
Our work with financial regulators
Climate risk is financial risk. Through the Ceres Accelerator for Sustainable Capital Markets, we move federal and state regulators to act on climate change as a systemic financial risk and implement systems-level change. We engage with and assess agencies including the Federal Reserve, the FDIC, the OCC, the NCUA, the SEC, the MSRB, the PCAOB, the CFTC, the FHFA, and the Treasury.
Our commitment to advocacy
Ceres is a long-time advocate for equitable and sustainable policies and regulations. We rally company and investor support, and engage directly with U.S. policymakers and regulators, to achieve historic victories. Here are a few of our priorities.
National Climate Disclosure Rule
After more than two decades of Ceres and our members calling on the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission to mandate robust climate reporting, publicly listed companies are now required to disclose their climate impacts and transition plans.
California Climate Disclosure Legislation
With the passage of SB 253 and SB 261, thousands of public and private companies will be required to report their climate risks and emissions across their supply chains under this landmark legislation in California.
Inflation Reduction Act
The Inflation Reduction Act marked a culmination of more than a decade of advocacy for federal climate legislation by Ceres and the companies we work with.Â
EUDR
The European Union’s Regulation on Deforestation-free Products (EUDR) raises the stakes for companies and investors alike. We assessed companies from across sectors on their no deforestation policies and readiness for the new regulatory environment.
CSRD
Thousands of companies will be required to report sustainability risks and impacts under the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive.Â
Our members advocate for a just and sustainable future
Our powerful networks of investors and companies advocate for innovative policies and regulations that build a cleaner, more just, and more sustainable economy. Together, we strengthen policies and regulations to drive bold economic transformations that will help protect people and the planet.
