As the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency begins the regulatory process to repeal federal greenhouse gas pollution standards for power plants, Ceres urges policymakers to maintain a stable policy environment that will drive investment and progress in key technologies. This includes supporting carbon capture technology and expanding the use of energy resources that increase reliability while reducing costs and pollution, including solar power, battery storage, and nuclear power.Â
“We have seen time and time again that policy certainty drives investment and innovation. Strong but pragmatic standards provide a stable business environment that produces cutting-edge technologies and business efficiencies – not only improving public health and reducing pollution but also bolstering U.S. competitiveness and economic growth,” said Anne Kelly, Ceres’ vice president of government relations. “That is why major companies across the U.S. – including many power providers – have supported strong power plant emissions standards. We urge the EPA to continue supporting progress and investment in American innovation and ensure the U.S. stays at the cutting edge of energy technology in a changing global economy.”Â
An analysis by Ceres in 2024 found that EPA’s pollution reduction standards have a long history of driving innovation, either catalyzing new technology or inspiring more efficient business practices, and that the agency has been pragmatic and realistic in setting deadlines. On those grounds, Ceres has argued that the power plant standards are not only necessary, but will help drive U.S. energy innovation, including in carbon capture solutions that are in growing global demand.Â
Ceres has also supported leading businesses in their advocacy for the EPA’s power plant emissions standards, which has included letters signed by dozens of companies to the agency. “These standards are achievable and will provide the clarity and certainty that the economy — and that we as major power sector customers and investors — need,” read one letter, signed by more than 30 companies.Â
