As the Senate begins the process today to confirm the next administrator of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, Ceres joins many others in welcoming Michael Regan as the country’s top environmental official.
“Michael Regan is a dedicated public servant who is committed to working across the aisle to tackle the climate crisis and protect the environment for people and the planet,” said Anne Kelly, vice president of government relations at the sustainability nonprofit organization Ceres. “If the U.S. is to cut emissions at the pace and scale necessary to mitigate the worst impacts of the climate crisis, we need leaders like Regan who are ready to roll up their sleeves and get to work.”
As North Carolina’s Environmental Secretary, Regan played a key role in the development of Gov. Roy Cooper’s Executive Order 80 and the state’s first Clean Energy Plan, which set the state’s ambitious climate targets to cut greenhouse gas emissions statewide, increase the number of electric vehicles on the road, and reduce energy use in public buildings. Major investors and companies in North Carolina applauded the plan, calling out the benefits to North Carolina residents and businesses of transitioning the state to clean energy and transportation.
“During his time in North Carolina, Regan showed an unwavering commitment to consensus building and collaborating with a broad range of stakeholders,” Kelly added. “The Biden-Harris administration and the U.S. as a whole will benefit from his ability to bring together a diverse set of interests—from business leaders to environmentalists and environmental justice advocates—to create bold and durable policy solutions. Ceres looks forward to working with Regan in his new role.”
