Business Call to Action: Build Back Better

On May 13, more than 300 businesses in the largest-ever call to action from the business community to members of the U.S. Congress will call for a build back better strategy that recognizes the need for a resilient, clean energy economy.

LEAD on Climate 2020 will virtually bring together more than 300 businesses - large and small - from sectors across the U.S. economy, to call on Congress to pass a resilient economic recovery plan while working toward long term climate solutions—including a price on carbon.

On May 13, businesses will make the case for a climate-smart recovery.

As Congress considers various paths to recovery from the health and economic crisis caused by the coronavirus pandemic, it should strive to build back better, by planning for a more resilient economy. Lawmakers should protect against future shocks and systemic threats—including those associated with climate change.

Businesses will advocate for:

Investment in resilient infrastructure

✔ Immediate investment in the country’s transition to a net-zero emissions economy

Longer-term solutions, including a price on carbon

More than 300 businesses to participate in LEAD on Climate 2020—the largest ever business advocacy day for climate action

Rep. Kathy Castor, DSM, Mars, Inc., Salesforce to hold virtual media briefing ahead of LEAD on Climate 2020 to call for a climate-smart recovery from COVID-19

CEOs and other representatives from more than 300 businesses including Capital One, DSM North America, Dow, Eileen Fisher, General Mills, Mars, Inc., Microsoft, NIKE, Salesforce and VISA will come together on Wednesday, May 13, for the largest business-led lawmaker education and advocacy day for climate action. They will call on Congress to build back a more resilient, sustainable economy from COVID-19.

LEAD on Climate 2020 will make the case to U.S. House and Senate lawmakers on both sides of the aisle that a climate-smart recovery is needed to build back better from the economic downturn. In virtual meetings with lawmakers, participating companies and investors will urge Congress to protect against future shocks and systemic risks stemming from the ongoing climate crisis.

Specifically, they will call for:

  • an accelerated transition to a net-zero emissions economy by 2050 or sooner
  • more investment in resilient infrastructure
  • effective climate solutions—including those that fully leverage the job opportunities of zero-carbon industries
  • support for longer-term, market-wide policy mechanisms such as a price on carbon

Hear from Rep. Kathy Castor, DSM’s Hugh Welsh, Mars’ Brad Figel, and Salesforce’s Patrick Flynn in a virtual media briefing ahead of LEAD on Climate 2020 at 10:00 am EST on Tuesday, May 12 to get a preview of what to expect from the day’s virtual congressional meetings.

LEAD on Climate 2020 is the largest mobilization of American and multinational companies and investors to call on U.S. congressional lawmakers on both sides of the aisle to take climate action as part of the economic recovery process. It has been organized by the sustainability nonprofit organization Ceres and other partner organizations. In 2019, LEAD on Carbon Pricing brought more than 75 businesses to Capitol Hill to call for a price on carbon. It was the largest business gathering to advocate for climate legislation in more than a decade.
