Levi Strauss & Co. Joins Ceres Network
Levi Strauss & Co. (LS&CO.), a leading global brand-name apparel marketer, has been approved as a Ceres network company by the Ceres Board of Directors, citing the company’s strong history of corporate citizenship, environmental progress, and support of strong climate and energy policy. LS&CO. is the newest of more than 80 companies that have joined Ceres, a leading coalition of investors, environmental groups and public interest organizations working with companies to address sustainability challenges such as global climate change.
LS&CO. has demonstrated leadership in sustainability and product sourcing practices, including establishing the first comprehensive supplier code of conduct for global supply chains, establishing and innovating a sector-leading restricted substance list, and applying strict wastewater effluent standards to every contract manufacturer in its direct supplier network. LS&CO. is active in numerous multi-stakeholder partnerships that address sustainability issues in the apparel industry and has a strong history of public policy advocacy in support of the company’s social and environmental positions and commitments. LS&CO. is a signatory of the UN Global Compact and its CEO Water Mandate and is a founding member of Business for Innovative Climate and Energy Policy (BICEP), a coalition of mostly consumer companies that advocates for sound national climate and energy policies.
“Levi Strauss & Co. is a recognized leader on labor standards and environmental issues in the apparel supply chain. The company has recently renewed and refined its overall environmental vision and strategy using a product-lifecycle approach which will enable the company to extend its impact beyond the areas within its direct control,” said Ceres president Mindy Lubber. “Ceres is looking forward to working with LS&CO. to develop innovative solutions that help the company advance its sustainability goals.
“We have learned over the years through our labor-standards work that external engagement and partnership are critical to advancing our objectives,” said John Anderson, LS&CO. President and CEO. “We believe that Ceres will be an invaluable resource in helping us to expand our understanding of the issues and expectations we will encounter as we develop new projects and work-streams that move our sustainability agenda.
Companies that join Ceres must make continuous strides in improving their sustainability performance and reporting practices by engaging with investors, environmental groups, and other stakeholders.
