GREEN BIZ: 50 Green, Profitable Companies Reveal Their Strategies and Successes
By American Benchmark Press with an Introduction by Mindy S. Lubber, President, Ceres
Climate change, water scarcity and a dangerous addiction to fossil fuels — the world faces immense crises, and yet the solution to them all lies within our grasp. By rebuilding, repowering, and refueling the planet to create a sustainable, green economy, we can meet these 21st century challenges head on. Forward-thinking businesses grasp the opportunities, and GREEN BIZ by the American Benchmark Press (November 18, 2008) highlights 50 of them, profiling the green strategies of such major businesses as IKEA, IBM, Herman Miller, Statoil , Pacific Gas & Electric, Nike and Timberland.
“These 50 companies are trailblazers to a more sustainable world, but they are not just good social citizens—they are smart businesses,” says Ceres president Mindy S. Lubber, who wrote the book’s introduction. “What’s especially striking is the diversity of their strategies, including smart deign, green manufacturing, sustainable sourcing and cutting-edge employee engagement. Yet, for all of their successes, each of the companies needs to be bolder in their actions, especially in regard to global climate change, arguably the biggest sustainability challenge of our time.”
GREEN BIZ, published in collaboration with Ceres, identifies the innovative ways leading global companies have adapted their business plans to become environmentally sustainable while remaining profitable and continuing to grow. Through insightful leadership and innovation, they are minimizing their environmental impact, while simultaneously fulfilling consumer demands and thriving financially. From Alcoa to Xanterra, each company’s “greenprint” pinpoints the actions it has taken to rely on sustainable resources and reduce its carbon footprint. It also identifies the person, product refinement, or other impetus that jump-started the company’s initiative, and shows how the business was able to combine cost savings, wise resource use, employee involvement, and marketing tools to maintain profitability while building their green strategies.
Tackling the immense environmental and social challenges of the 21st century will require increasingly bold action by business, and the companies profiled in GREEN BIZ are far from done. Each company’s profile highlights the challenges that remain, identifying how the company can move to entrench environmental best practices more consistently across all operations, global supply chains, product lines, and employees—up to the board of directors and CEOs.
The profiles make compelling reading and are rich with useful and practical information about how these companies formulated and implemented their green strategies and also continued to serve their customers and investors. It’s a long road ahead, but thanks to these and other businesses, we are on our way to a more sustainable world.
GREEN BIZ has been compiled by American Benchmark Press with the cooperation of Ceres, a leading coalition of investors and environmental leaders based in Boston, Massachusetts.
