Environmental Defense and the Alliance for Environmental Innovation Join Ceres Network to Promote Environmental Responsibility
Ceres, the Coalition for Environmentally Responsible Economies, today announced two new participants in its network. Environmental Defense, a national nonprofit organization representing 300,000 members and The Alliance for Environmental Innovation, it's corporate partnership program, have joined the Ceres Coalition, a network of more than 75 organizations promoting corporate responsibility.
By joining the Ceres Coalition, Environmental Defense lends its support to efforts to promote environmental responsibility among Ceres endorsing corporations. Coalition members such as Environmental Defense help initiate and monitor corporate environmental progress and foster accountability by bringing together a range of experts that help corporations find solutions to their environmental problems.
Environmental Defense, headquartered in New York City, has worked since 1967 to link science, economics and law to create innovative, equitable and cost-effective solutions to the most urgent environmental problems. Its staff of 170 people includes over 75 full-time scientists, economists and attorneys who work on regional, national and international issues. Environmental Defense is a leading advocate for economic incentives as a new approach to solving environmental problems.
The Alliance for Environmental Innovation is a joint initiative of Environmental Defense and the Pew Charitable Trusts. The Alliance works cooperatively with businesses to reduce waste and build environmental considerations into business decisions. By bringing the expertise and perspective of environmental scientists and economists together with the business skills of major corporations, the Alliance creates solutions that make environmental and business sense.
"The addition of Environmental Defense and The Alliance for Environmental Innovation adds strength to the Ceres Coalition," says Robert Massie, Ceres executive director. "As leaders in the environmental movement, these organizations will enable us to take the dialogue on corporate responsibility to a higher level."
"Environmental Defense believes companies can do the right thing environmentally and still provide service to customers and profits to shareholders," said Gwen Ruta, director of the Alliance for Environmental Innovation. "Environmental Defense is proud to join the Ceres network of organizations working with companies toward corporate environmental responsibility."
Ceres (Coalition for Environmentally Responsible Economies) is the leading coalition of environmental, investor and advocacy groups working together for a sustainable future. Its network includes a community of forward-looking companies and multi-national corporations that endorse the Ceres Principles, a ten-point code of environmental conduct. www.ceres.org for more information.
