INCR partners with investors in North America and worldwide to advance the investment opportunities and reduce the material risks posed by sustainability challenges such as global climate change and water scarcity.
With its unique capacity to foster constructive engagement between investors, companies, environmentalists and policymakers, INCR has grown from 10 institutional investors managing $600 billion in 2003, to over 100 members managing over $11 trillion in assets today. Members include BlackRock, Deutsche Asset Management and TIAA-CREF, as well as public pension funds in California, Connecticut, Florida, New York and Maryland.
GREATER INVESTOR VOICE IN DISCLOSURE AND POLICY-MAKING
Due to INCR’s efforts, investors now have a stronger voice in requiring corporate disclosure of material climate change risks and opportunities, as well as other sustainability risks and opportunities, in company financial filings. INCR members also aggregate their voices to make the business case for strong climate change and clean energy policies that will facilitate low carbon investments.
IMPROVED CORPORATE GOVERNANCE
INCR provides investors with support and coordination in filing corporate shareholder resolutions on climate change and other pressing sustainability issues. More than 100 such resolutions were filed with U.S. companies in 2011, dozens of which were later withdrawn after companies agreed to take action on the investors’ requests.
CUTTING-EDGE TOOLS FOR SUSTAINABLE INVESTING
INCR members receive cutting-edge Ceres reports on topics such as the undisclosed water scarcity risks in municipal bonds and financial risks of unconventional energy extraction, including coal-to-liquids and Canadian oil sands production. Members can also participate in regular webinars on emerging investment opportunities in low-carbon technologies and across all asset classes, including “green” bonds.
MORE MEANINGFUL ENGAGEMENTS
INCR provides a forum for investors to share information, intelligence, experiences and strategies. Members enjoy special access and networking opportunities with their global counterparts and company CEOs through the annual INCR spring meeting, held as part of the Ceres annual conference, and the bi-annual Investor Summit on Climate Risk hosted at the United Nations.
