In response to President Obama’s “On Site Renewables Challenge”, issued at the Solar Summit, to encourage private companies to increase their use of solar power, Clif Bar has launched its 50/50 by 2020 initiative. This initiative calls for their supply chain partners to use more solar and other renewable energy with a goal of 50 key supply chain partners transitioned to at least 50% renewable energy by 2020.

Clif Bar’s own operations are already carbon neutral, and the company is working to reduce CO2 emissions from their buildings, manufacturing processes and business travel by 10% below 2009 levels by 2015.

As part of the progress toward that goal, Clif Bar’s headquarters in Emeryville, CA are powered by one of the largest “smart” solar arrays in North America. The “smart” solar array is equipped with individual solar panel monitors to maximize efficiency and output. The solar array provides 100% of the office’s electricity needs and 70% of the energy used to produce hot water.

We look forward to seeing progress on Clif Bar’s supply chain renewable energy goals.
