Best Buy Joins BICEP Coalition Advocating for Strong Climate and Energy Policy in the United States

February 24, 2010 – Best Buy, a U.S.-based global retailer of consumer electronics, has joined Business for Innovative Climate and Energy Policy (BICEP), a coalition of major consumer companies advocating for strong U.S. climate and energy policy.

Best Buy, a U.S.-based global retailer of consumer electronics, has joined Business for Innovative Climate and Energy Policy (BICEP), a coalition of major consumer companies advocating for strong U.S. climate and energy policy.

Best Buy has been an innovative leader among electronics retailers in sustainability and energy conservation. In addition to committing to lower its operational greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions through energy efficiency initiatives and renewable energy technologies, Best Buy has been helping consumers reduce their own energy footprint by offering more efficient products and packaging options, educating customers on using products more efficiently and offering an in-store recycling program for used electronics.

“At Best Buy we’re committed to building sustainable business practices and helping our customers realize ways to live more sustainable lives,” says Laura Bishop, Best Buy’s Senior Director of Government Relations. “ We are honored to join BICEP in their efforts to advance legislation addressing climate change and promoting a clean energy economy.”

In joining BICEP Best Buy teams up with other retail giants such as Nike, Starbucks and Levi Strauss & Co. to help advance strong climate and energy policies in the U.S.

“Companies like Best Buy are keen to the fact that we can no longer maintain business as usual when it comes to climate and energy.,” said Ceres President Mindy Lubber. “In addition to the actions Best Buy and other companies of BICEP are taking to reduce their own environmental impact, it’s crucial that the U.S. adopt strong climate and energy policies that will spur innovation in clean energy technology, create domestic jobs, reduce pollution and create a level playing field to keep American companies competitive as the world transitions to a clean energy economy.”

The cross-country “Race for American Jobs” BICEP members are now part of will culminate in Washington D.C. on March 10th, after stops in Portland, Oregon, Denver, Columbus, Ohio and Manchester, New Hampshire. In Washington BICEP members will meet with U.S. Senators and the Obama Administration to voice their support for comprehensive climate and energy legislation.
